Reports of a new hardware H.264 encoder from Elgato have been circulating for a few days. But a quick check of the Elgato website turns up nothing. No press release, no product info, no pics. Nothing.

Turns out however, that the reports are true and the Turbo.264 will ship in April for £69. In a nutshell it takes the burden of encoding video for your iPod or Apple TV away from the Mac’s processor and onto this little USB 2-connected device.
It works with any application that supports QuickTime, integrates with EyeTV’s one-click export to iPod function, and encodes to either 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 H.264. It will ship with an application that will allow you to encode video by dragging and dropping, which will export any file that QuickTime can handle natively or with help from third party plug-ins like Flip and DivX.
It will need any Mac with a USB 2 port and you’ll be able to read a review in MacUser sometime in May.
