More on that European 3G iPhone Announcement

July 4th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Guy Kewney likes a punt, or so it seems, as he takes another shot at predicting an announcement of a 3G iPhone in Europe. Kewney says that the reason for the hold up, according to his sources is that Vodafone’s UK lawyers were unhappy with the contract, which had been drawn up under German law. The UK lawyers wanted it drawn up under English law.

Bizarrely however, Kewney then goes on to talk about iPhone sales and the difference between sales and activations and seems to be saying that Vodafone is waiting for 1 million activations before it announces.

Even more bizarrely, he goes on to quote an Engadget piece about real availability as opposed to Apple’s stated availability - as usual, Apple is overly optimistic about how soon orders will be processed - as some sort of justification for his stance.

I have two questions:

1. Why would Vodafone wait for 1 million activations before announcing?

2. Why when every iPhone announcement so far has been made by Apple, would it allow Vodafone to announce a European launch?

Anyone?

They ask: 1. Why would Vodafone wait for 1 million activations before announcing? […]
