Thoughts on the MacBook Air

January 16th, 2008 · No Comments

1. It’s a stunning feat of engineering.

2. It would never have been possible had Apple not moved to Intel.

3. Apple clearly has some clout in the Intel boardroom.

4. The lack of an optical drive, Ethernet port and Firewire port don’t matter to most people.

5. The SSD version will become the standard inside two years. Goodbye hard drive.

6. The inability to upgrade Ram is mitigated by the better than anticipated 2GB standard config.

7. The inability to replace the battery is an issue. Batteries lose their ability to charge over time. Fact.

8. Regarding performance, Paul says it best: ‘don’t buy ultraportable notebooks for their workstation-like performance.’

9. It’s too damn expensive, especially in the UK where there’s a 33% mark-up compared to the US price.

For a better explanation of point four, see Chris’ post

Final verdict? Back to Paul: ‘Do I want one? Hell yes. Would I pay for one myself? Nope.’
