Cool Mail hack for IMAP Gmail users

April 18th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve been using my Gmail account as an IMAP account with Apple Mail for a while now. Mostly, it works well but I’ve always been irritated by the additional mailboxes which are added to Mail’s sidebar as a result. Often they’re out of sync with the Gmail box which sits under Inbox at the top […]

That iMac lawsuit

April 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

You’ve probably heard about the iMac lawsuit by now. You know, the one where Apple is being sued for claiming that the 20in model displays ‘millions of colors’ when in reality it displays 262,000 colors and uses either dithering or frame rate control to fool the human eye into thinking that it’s seeing millions of […]

Photoshop Express first impressions

March 27th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Photoshop Express may have taken a while to arrive, and even then it’s still only in beta, but it’s looking pretty good.

The editing features are beautifully implemented. In addition to basic features like cropping, rotating and changing the exposure there are a number of other options ranging from the genuinely useful to what can best […]

March 20th, 2008 · No Comments

The Wall Street Journal reports that as well as being heavy internet users in general, iPhone owners are also by far the largest consumers of mobile television and video.

iPhone not so Flash

March 20th, 2008 · No Comments

ZDNet reports that Adobe has ‘clarified’ its position on Flash on the iPhone. The company issue a statement yesterday which added the following to CEO Shantanu Narayen’s comments on Tuesday.
However, to bring the full capabilities of Flash to the iPhone web-browsing experience we do need to work with Apple beyond and above what is available […]

FT story on ‘all you can eat’ iPods

March 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Today’s piece in the FT, which has predictably been picked up by pretty much every major news outlet, is a classic ‘we’ve got bugger all to say, but we’ll run with it anyway’ story.
You can tell this by the fact that there’s not a single quote from anyone in the story and the fact that […]

Making a Time Machine Volume Bootable

February 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Time Machine is easily my favourite Leopard feature. For the first time I have a regular, automatic backup routine that runs in the background and never confronts me with annoying dialogue boxes whinging about how it was unable to back up my data (that’s you Retrospect, that is). Add to that the ease with which […]

Guardian Blogger in MB Air criticism shock

January 21st, 2008 · 7 Comments

Two comments from The Guardian’s Jack Schofield about the MacBook Air that, try as I might, I couldn’t let pass without comment:
‘If you can’t carry a second battery then Apple has screwed up bigtime in the main market for these things, which is people like me’
Er no, Jack. I’m not privy, sadly, to the inner […]

Trumpet blowing

January 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Back in August 2005, I wrote in MacUser that
‘Apple has so many of the pieces of the jigsaw already in place - iTunes, QuickTime 7, the Mac - that it would seem almost a no-brainer for it to become the premiere conduit through which Internet TV is delivered to our homes.’
Three announcements this week make […]

A lesson in choice

January 17th, 2008 · No Comments

If you want a minty sweet, don’t buy a packet of Starburst.
If you want an in-depth analysis of how George Bush’s latest comments on Iran will affect the ’special relationship’, don’t look for it in The Star.
And if you want the most powerful and upgradeable laptop that your £1200 can buy, don’t pre-order a MacBook […]
